Binary Fission: (16)
- Cell copies its DNA and separates the 2 copies to either side of the cell
- Many cell division proteins including FtsZ gather at the future division site
- FtsZ forms a ring-like structure at division site
- Division occurs and cell is cleaved in two, new cell wall is synthesized at split site
Growth Cycle: (15)
- Lag phase- cells adjust to new environment
- Exponential (log) phase- cells start dividing rapidly by binary fission
- Stationary phase- growth becomes limited due to lack of nutrients, build up of metabolites or lack of space. cells stop dividing
- Death phase- cells eventually lose ability to divide and die
