Plant Growth (18):
pic (17)
  • Plants exhibit indeterminate growth
-Meristems: areas of the plant that retain rapidly dividing undifferentiated cells                throughout its whole life
-These undifferentiated cells may eventually differentiate to form more specific              tissue and cell types
-Plants do not have a pre-programmed body plan
-Plants continue to grow throughout their lives
  • The location of the meristems determines the pattern of plant growth
          -Apical meristems
-located at the tips of roots and shoots
-dedicated to primary growth (increase in length)
-primary growth is found in herbaceous & woody plants and monocots &                       dicots
 -Lateral meristems
-located near periphery of the plant, usually in a cylinder
-dedicated to secondary growth (increase in girth)
-secondary growth is found in all woody and some herbaceous plants
-all dicots have lateral meristems and secondary growth
